UTEC Launches New Language and Cultural Center
“Solving complex problems from a global and intercultural perspective to build a better world”
The Language and Cultural Center (Idiomas UTEC) is a unit attached to the Internationalization Office, whose objective is to provide language training to our community and the general public.
“In a globalized world, knowledge of languages provides us with various opportunities, from studying abroad, accessing a greater number of job offers, as well as updated general and academic content and publications. Today, knowledge of languages allows us to stand out in different areas, and it is also the bridge to a new culture”, said Patricia Orbegoso, Head of Internationalization.
Within the offerings of the Language and Culture Center, we currently have the Conversa Academics program, which offers the university community and the general public English language classes in regular and academic contexts. This program is aligned with the achievements per level suggested by the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) which allows the participant to achieve the competencies in a progressive manner
Conversa Academics is comprised of 16 modules, each module has a duration of 5 and a half weeks and includes 54 synchronous academic hours divided into 27 sessions of 2 academic hours each, daily from Monday to Friday from 7:50 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and 12 weekend sessions on Saturdays from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Sundays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Additionally, participants have 30 asynchronous hours according to their availability.
During this program, participants will have the benefit of accessing two international certification exams at no additional cost at the end of modules 9 and 16. The program is offered in an entirely virtual format, through the Canvas and Webex platforms. Additionally, it uses the Learning Management System (LMS) as a complement, which allows for more contact hours for learning.
Conversa Academics employs an innovative methodology based on active listening, so that participants can identify terms and expressions that will allow them to increase their learning in regular and academic contexts. All sessions work with books hosted on the learning platform and other electronic materials.
"In order to keep up with our current globalized and competitive environment, we have the offer of the Conversa Academics program for university participants who seek to expand their knowledge of the English language, not only for everyday communicative purposes, but also for academic purposes that will improve their professional development. The Academics structure includes levels that help participants to measure their progress in relation to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages through certifications that are part of the program", said Ruth Castillo, Coordinator of the Conversa Academics program.
